Odd referee choice proves most entertaining PDF Print E-mail

The Unsworth U14 ‘Dragons’ were entertained in more ways than one by Prestwich Heys Blacks yesterday – certainly the league’s bizarre choice of referee had even the most silent of parents voicing their dismay at some of the decisions.

Never in my 30-odd years of watching, playing, managing & coaching football have I seen so many dropped balls!

In a game that neither side seemed to want to really compete for, proceedings remained relatively even throughout the first half – despite Unsworth opening the scoring after 5 minutes.

The introduction of Joe in midfield was a masterstroke by Craig and we started to at least challenge (and win!) some balls in the midfield, which released Sam to press forward more (gaining his just rewards with a well deserved goal).

Later on Sam could have had a second and possibly a third as he caused havoc in the Prestwich defence.

At 3-3 and with time running out for both sides, there was a worry that this could be 2 points dropped and a real worry that could Prestwich steal a winner and all 3 points (similar to this fixture last season).

At the death, it was Unsworth that took all 3 points with a great move culminating in a goal that sealed a victory for the Dragons – in a game that could’ve gone either way.

Three points is three points, but guys – we have got to start competing more for the ball. Allowing the opposition time to control an unchallenged ball is just asking for trouble (especially when we play other teams further up the table). Hopefully Craig will be working on that and some concentration techniques at Tuesday’s training.

Goals: Sam (1), Casey (2), Aaron (1)

Man of the Match: Sam
