Unsworth made the trip to Summerseat Juniors on the 17th April knowing that only a win would ensure that the promotion push stays firmly on track. Unsworth have to play Little Lever this Wednesday knowing that a victory today and in midweek should mathematically ensure promotion, so it meant we had to keep our focus and come away with another 3 points in the bag.
Last week saw a nervous affair with Unsworth just edging out Radcliffe so we had to make sure that we didn't make any mistakes today and ideally show that we haven't lost our composure and keep playing good football.
On a glorious morning we had to settle for a very late kick meaning that it would be a rush home afterwards to catch the Derby on the telly. Only Dec was missing for the game so with nearly a full squad to pick from Danny and John were fairly comfortable that the lads could get the job done without too many problems.
A change was made in defence with Liam slotting in at left back, however we had the usual centre halves of Rob and Oliver and Luke taking up the spot on the right. In midfield we saw Mason and Dom along with the ever late Jake and Elliott. Up front Khol and Joe got the nod. That meant Charlie, Tom and Kain starting on the bench.
Unsworth kicked off on a very large and very uneven pitch. Unsworth were trying their best to play football but with the ball bobbling everywhere it was difficult for both teams. The pitch looked like it had been stripped of grass and the lads were finding it hard to judge passes, either being under or overhit.
Summerseat are a very very big team with some looking a lot older than 12 but Danny and John said this could work to our advantage, but only if we used our footballing brains. As Summerseat were so big then if the lads kept the ball on the ground any hight advantage would be lost and if we could play the ball round the back none of the home team were likely to be able to catch any of Unsworth's superpaced attackers.
The game was 10 minutes old and with what looked like a stalemate developing Unsworth took the lead with a very well worked move ending with a very neat finish from Khol. 1-0 and we were starting to dominate the play. Mason was running the midfield with Jake playing a great supporting role and Summerseat looked out of sorts. When the home team did manage to win the ball and break, Liam was sweeping everything up at the back and he was looking like a natural full back. Unsworth were looking more and more solid as the half progressed. Some neat play and distribution out to the left saw Elliott break away from his man, skip past a few more Summerseat players but instead of looking up he decided to have a go and hit the post. Not long after some delightful skill from Mason released Dom to break through but the resulting shot was at the keeper. It was now all Unsworth but the second goal was slow in coming. With Luke asking for options from his throw ins he flung the ball down the right wing. The Summerseat defender made a hash of it and Dom broke down the right to cross in to the home box. The ball arrived at Khol and with a great piece of control he performed what looked like a backheel dragback which opened the goal up for him to make it 2-0.
John made a few changes replacing Khol and Joe with Tom and Charlie and not long after this pair linked up. Tom made a great break down the right skipping past the Summerseat team to chip the ball to the back post finding an unmarked Charlie who nodded in to make it 3-0.
Just before half time Unsworth suffered an unwelcome blow with Rob taking a knock and having to come off. This meant a reshuffled defence as Luke dropped into the middle and Dom dropping to right back. The ref blow for half time and Unsworth knew that the game was theirs as long as they kept it simple and kept their shape in the second half.
At half time Rob couldn't come back on so Liam moved from left back to right, Dom moved back to right midfield and Kain slotted back to his more normal left back spot. The second half kicked off and it was to be a truly uneventful affair. The heat seemed to be taking its toll with the game slowing at times to walking pace. Neither team took total control but Unsworth never looked like letting the game get away from them. The game finished without another goal but Unsworth returned to Hillock with another 3 points and another clean sheet for Ethan.
We now move onto Wednesday and what could be the biggest game of the season. Should Unworth beat Little Lever then Unsworth move onto 43 points with 4 games left. Little Lever would be on 31 points with 4 games left so this is a big one. Kick off is around 6.15 so get there no later than 5.45pm where possible. The kick off time is flexible as we have to wait for everyone to get there.
No training this week due to the match. Any problems let me know and well done to all for the victory on Saturday. |
