Unsworth Dragons v Mauraders Thunderbolts
As Daniel, Michel, Sam, Joe, Ted, Rowan and Josh took their places on the pitch, I got the feeling that this was going to be a very exciting game and I wasn’t wrong. The Dragons looked strong and within minutes both Sam and Rowan were able to have a crack at goal but unfortunately both shots went wide of the target. Thunderbolts managed to slip through the midfielders and were looking dangerous in front of our goal, but they didn’t reckon on Michel who twice won the ball and cleared it away, where it eventually found Rowan who scored the first goal of the match. This seemed to fire the Thunderbolts up and they managed to break away to equalize, leaving the score 1-1 at the end of the first half . The second half saw a couple of substitutions and an early goal from superscorer Rowan who showed no sign of tiredness despite having a new baby in the house and probably some sleepless nights. With the possession of the ball quite equal, the next opportunity came from Kai with a great pass to Ted, but Thunderbolts defence put an excellent tackle in and managed to win the ball back. They only got it as far as Michel and Sam who stood firm in defence. Alex and Cain showed some great promise in midfield and won the ball enabling Kai to make a break for it but disappointingly, his shot at goal was picked up by the keeper. Rowan, determined as ever to score had a couple of great shots from 30 yards (well I didn’t measure exactly) but they were wide of the goal. Thunderbolts players had a chance to equalize but Daniels safe hands kept us on top. The game was end to end and after a few corners for both teams Thunderbolts left us standing and got their second goal of the game, much to the delight of their supporters who were obviously getting frustrated by their team trailing. This didn’t deter our lads though and with Josh on the pitch, Joe managed to win the ball and made a superb pass to Rowan, enabling him to get his hat trick, quickly followed by a shot from outside the penalty area, bringing the score to 4-2 in our favour. Not one to be left off the score sheet, Sam took the opportunity and ran, skilfully controlling the ball virtually the full length of the pitch to put the ball in the back of the net to make it 5-2. Thunderbolts never gave up and managed to slot one in past Daniel seconds before Alan blew the final whistle. The game ended up 5-3 and after the excellent performance from every player the decision of Man of the Match was impossible so it was unanimously decided that they all shared the award - well done lads keep up the good work and you might just get a full Mars Bar each! Congratulations to Rowan and his family on the birth of their new baby boy.
