Cardinal Villa have an excellent record at Drinkwater Park and were the home team against Unsworth Open Age on Sunday 18th April. In a tight game, with chances few and a hard fought physical game, it was Unsworth who triumphed with a 2-0 victory over Cardinal Villa who joined the league from the Middleton Premier Division this season. From an outstanding display of defence from Keiran Davies, Danny Mather, Josh Kedie and Lewis Saunders, who replaced the working Ross Jones, and the safe hands of Matt Barton Cardinal Villa were limited to few chances in the first half. Unsworth came close on many occasions, with chances falling to Craig Moffat, who had one effort blocked on the line, and completely miss timed his header from close range. Unsworth were the dominant force in the first half. Jamie Macklin robbed the centre-half only to be brought down in the penalty area. Up stepped "Mighty Mouse" Mike Mellouish to take the penalty and made no mistake. The Brad Higgins got between the two centre-halves and lashed the ball home from 10 yards into the top corner. Cardinal Villa made a fight of it in the second half but could not break down a stubborn midfield and defence. Dean Higgins made his debut for Unsworth, replacing a knackered Moffat and put a shift in on the left. Lewis Macklin replaced Brad Higgins and suffered a 'dead-leg' for his troubles. Match Obvervation - Jamie, when you dont go clubbing till 4.00am you can actually play some decent football. Help Needed - Unsworth need someone with a private jet to go and rescue Lee Bushell from the Icelandic Volcano. He went to Thailand for 16 days its looking like he'll be away for 5 weeks!!!!! Dont worry Bush, we will still be playing when you get back on hopefully. |
