Unsworth Open Age played their first game in 6 weeks on 31st January, away to Footballers who had beaten them in the Millennium Cup.
Playing on what can only be described as a cow field, Unsworth made a bright start with Lee Bushell making some good runs down the left and put some telling crosses over, but no strikers were able to get on the end of it, with Jamie's feet still in Sol Viva, and Mitchell still carrying and injury. Footballers made two half chances in a game with few opportunities in the first half. The breakthrough came just before half time, when "I forgot my shinpads" Barton, launched a ball out of his own penanty area which put Footballers centre-half under pressure to head into his own goal. FIRST GOAL SCORER BARTON (see I told you I would credit this goal as yours Matt!!!). With 10 minutes left of the first half Lewis Saunders was replaced by Brad Higgins. Unsworth took control of the game with Mike Mellouish and Danny Smith running the mid-field show, Josh Kedie and Danny Mather playing the over-lapping fullbacks, it was only a matter of time before the second goal came. Danny Smith made a fantastic run through the middle, riding three challenges before skying his effort over the bar, but he made no mistake five minutes later when he drove at the defence, smashing the ball home to make it 2-0.
Footballers looked like they could never break down the solid performance by Mike Tristram and Keiran Davies at the heart of the Unsworth defence. Craig Moffat made his debut for the club with a solid display. Ollie Colgan replaced Brad Higgins for the last 10 minutes of the game. Lewis Macklin was injured and Ross Jones not used, the future looks bright. Next game - 6th February 2010 against Whitefield Wanderers at Goshen. 10.30am kick off, weather permitting!!!! |
